Just like any other industry, digital marketing is full of jargons and acronyms that are unique to it. If you do not take the time to study the basic terms, you will experience some trouble in understanding the entire concept of digital marketing. There are many acronyms that you already probably know about, like PPC (pay per click) and SEO (search engine optimization). But these two are just a few from the hundreds of terminologies you need to learn. If you have a website or online business, here are some of the jargons you may have seen a lot but possibly did not know the meaning of. Black Hat SEOThis is the opposite of White Hat SEO wherein tactics are used to attempt to trick the search engines to get better rankings for a website. Using black hat tactics will get your site lower rankings. In worst cases, you can get banned from search engines altogether. CTACTA stands for "call to action". This prompts a customer to do something. For example, "Click here to get a 25% off today." or "Click this link to download the PDF file", or just “click here”. As a business owner, it does not matter how enticing your contents are. If you do not have a clear call to action, your customers or clients will find it difficult to move forward and possibly abandon your website. CACCustomer acquisition cost or CAC refers to the dollar amount you spent to acquire new clients or customers. For example, you hired a marketing expert and had to pay $1000 for his services. His efforts delivered five new customers to you. The CAC of this effort is $200. ConversionThis is the goal of marketing. Conversion is the step from your marketing efforts to a customer taking an action. Most of the time, conversion means the customer either signed in, left his contact information or made a direct purchase after visiting your site. Domain AuthorityDomain authority is a score ranging from zero to a hundred and it predicts how a website will rank on search engines. This was developed by Moz and is often used by SEO professionals to compare one site to another. It also tracks website improvement overtime. Google Penguin UpdateThis was the infamous Google update in April 2012 that aimed to combat websites that had participated in questionable link building practices. This update targeted websites that obtained backlinks by purchasing them from established link networks. This practice is considered to be Black Hat SEO (see the definition above) and should be avoided for good. Google Panda UpdateAs Google is trying to serve their users by giving them fast and relevant results, the Google Panda Update was launched. This was a method where they searched for lengthy content for target keywords. Essentially, if two or more websites have the exact same or similar content, Google devalues them in search rankings. This is why today, the best way to rank high in search engines is to create lengthy, reliable and informative posts. Influencer MarketingSimilar to celebrity endorsements and TV commercials, marketers and brands often reach out to online content creators known as influencers to tap into specific markets. As these influencers have a high following in the community, brands tend to partner with them for people to gain better awareness within that specific community. For example, a makeup brand would partner up with online beauty bloggers to create content for them. Internal LinkingThis is placing hyperlinks in one of the pages within the same site. It helps users find more helpful information while improving your site interaction. This enhances your SEO efforts as well. Link BuildingThis is a process of obtaining backlinks from one website back to your own. Link building is an essential part of SEO. But because of the algorithm updates, this has become particularly challenging. Today, highly valued backlinks should be acquired organically. Obtaining backlinks from authority sites will help boost your ranking as well. Link JuiceThis is a term used in SEO that refers to the equity passed to a site from a high authority websites that have more link juice. This positively affects your rankings. The more link juice your site has, the more you can boost your search engine ranking. QueryThis is another term used for "search term" or "keyword". With the use of Google Adwords, you can determine the actual term used by the searchers to click on your ads. There are still hundreds of other terms related to digital marketing. But for now, these are the idioms you need to know for you to gain a better understanding of how you can use online marketing techniques to help boost your brand, business and website.
